And When A Hero Comes Along [#48]
Hi friends,
You're surely caught up on Trumplandia so I've decided to do a Trump-free edition!

I'm Reading
That gif above says a lot about male entitlement in Korea. This photo essay masterfully flips racial stereotypes. Journalists drink too much and are bad at managing our emotions (SHOCKER). What ADHD is, and isn't. We all need to care about the 2020 Census. How to respond to terrorism. An awful attempt to shut down a reporter. The U.S. maternal death rate is unacceptable. People are helping pay off school lunch debt to stop the practice of lunch shaming. A compelling goodbye to NPR and its more frustrating norms. Mark Zuckerberg, establishment man. Even the Kardashian show has gotten sad. A pet tortoise teaches us about mortality. Free the MILF. Leaked CIA travel tips.
I've had two consistent heroes since childhood: my Grandma Rock, and Mr. Rogers. As we mourn the recent passing of grandma, there happened to be lots of great reads out on Mr. Rogers. Like this moving profile of him, from the Esquire archives. And someone visualized every color cardigan Mr. Rogers wore. Amazing.
Musings
Goodbye to my grandmother, an OG feminist trailblazer. Free Febrezing is a thing. Quick thoughts on the emotional work of motherhood, with GOOD Magazine.
Watching & Listening
Code Switch discusses the Atlantic cover story about growing up with a slave. Pod Save America falls in the category of "should be 20 minutes shorter" and "men going on about things." But I like its wisecracky, dickish edge. (Don't hate me.) And on my to-watch list is Burn After Reading, the 2008 Coen brothers movie which people keep saying can perfectly sum up the times we're living in.
As usual please write me with any comments, complaints, quips, etc. And a housekeeping note: Starting with this edition, you can view the links in the form of a list on my blog.
Febreze forever,
Elise
