Help for Houston [#56]
Y'all.

Let's skip the wind-up because you know what's happening. I'm feeling both foreboding about the next few months and wonder and gratitude for all the helpers out there.
Where To Help After Harvey
Mayor Sylvester Turner has set up a local fund through Greater Houston Community Foundation.
The Coalition for the Homeless is coordinating shelters and organizations across the city.
To help our animal friends, the SPCA of Texas.
Food banks across the area, compiled by the Houston Press.
The Texas Diaper Bank helps address the diaper gap for communities in need.
I'm Reading
On Harvey: "What 100-year flood comes twice a year?" Eric Berger, formerly the Houston Chronicle's "Sci Guy," is the best local source on weather in the area. How Texas was warned, but unprepared for a monster storm hitting Houston. KHOU-TV had to set up a makeshift set after its newsroom flooded. And from a previous Hu's letter: Houston's diversity and openness make it a microcosm of America's future.
If you read ONE thing, make it David Roth's piece on Donald Trump. What Joe Arpaio did while he was in law enforcement. Why people are still racist. "Yeah, every friggin' trucker listens to NPR." The case for gossip (but not the celebrity kind). Millennials are killing napkins (and other things). Quick hotel room workouts.
Work and Musings
Fake war is happening on the peninsula again, amid heightened tensions. Samsung's leader got five years in the slammer. Will it change the way things are done in South Korea? Some blather on Korean trend culture for a mini-doc from High Snobiety.
Watching
Sesame Street's take on Despacito, "El Patito" (Lol-ed when Bert goes, "OH, NOT THIS SONG AGAIN!")
You Me Her (Netflix) was way funnier than I expected.
You're the Worst is coming back! (You're the Worst is actually the best.)
Finally, a question: a good friend of mine has taken to crawling under an anxiety blanket and says it works!?! Have any of y'all given this a try? If so, let me know what you think. I am definitely not above this kind of purchase.
As usual, please send this on to anyone who might be interested, notably on the helping Houston part.
Texas strong,
E
