La La Land [#73]
Hello from Venice Beach, where I live now! Crazy.
The sun shines every day, so it feels like I'm in a grittier version of The Truman Show. Every white guy looks like Spencer Pratt. There are electric scooters everywhere, which people actually use, but the locals seem to hate. We recently did a little thing on Morning Edition about Bird electric scooters being tossed into the Pacific by angry people.
Someone wrote me asking if I was going to continue the newsletter and the answer is of course! Sorry for the long break — I had to check an international move off the to-do list, with many complicating factors that are too boring to explain.
What I Read
On the trail with Beto O'Rourke, summer sensation. Race is the central cleavage in American politics. The economist behind the one percent's takeover of America. An incredible story about a huckster (who isn't Donald Trump). A beautiful tribute to Aretha Franklin by Friend Matt. Why digital notetaking will never replace the physical journal. Why we need sleep. Korean food, taste memories and mourning. Overcome your grief by really feeling it. This profile of Michelle Williams. Let Crazy Rich Asians be, writes Friend Kat. The razing of Clark Gable's Houston home. John Cho is one step ahead. Three steps to mastering a new subject. Potholders to pack curling irons and other cheap packing hacks.
