Party Down [#23]
Happy Monday,
It's summertime in Korea, and we're about to head into the "monsoon season," which I avoided last July by having a baby and not really going anywhere. This year the family will head to Taipei to study Mandarin while I go to Hawaii (for the world's largest naval exercise) and Washington, D.C., to guest host Weekend Edition Sunday. Hope you'll tune in. Meantime, many links to share:
What I Read
Using only logic to make decisions doesn't hold up to scrutiny. A 'human sized-life' is where happiness comes from. Pessimism can give marriage a boost. Or, just be a cute baby and reap the benefits.
Why a 'nice Trump' is never gonna happen. A style guide for covering him. And while we're on the topic, we should talk more about whiteness. Grappling with Orlando and the fear of how some victims might have been outed in the worst way. Notebooking is back (or, why they never went away). The consent tax that comes with being a lady. Things women should wear.
What I Wrote/Talked About
How Korea's high speed wifi affects tech habits, for WYNC's Note to Self podcast. How pollution's changed me. And you can't blame all Korea's pollution problems on China. A dispatch from the contentious talks between the U.S. and China in Beijing, and a postcard on all the Chinese proverbs they were droppin'. And we went down to the Korean island of Jeju for a super weird camp all about North Korea.
What I Watched
So much Party Down, thanks to the NYT's new 'Watching' newsletter. I am shocked, shocked that I just learned about this cult favorite, from Starz network in 2009. Every episode had me cry-laughing at one point or another.
Samantha Bee is friggin' killing it.
Recommendations
The Field Notes line of notebooks now has specially-designed reporters notebooks, with a design lift by CBS' John Dickerson. Pretty geeky but hey, I was excited about it. Especially given the aforementioned notebook renaissance.
Ciao for now,
Elise
