Permanent Vibe Shift [#95]
Hiiiii! Is this thing on?
It's the seventh year but only the 95th Hu's Letter. I have not written because I am tapped out! I also have not blogged, written news stories, and am not even texting that well because I have been heads down trying to pump out the draft of my first book, which is due right about ... now.
But because I am almost through this grind, I wanted to pop up and share some links that might be of interest to you. Please write me back if you want to see any more or less of anything. Though you couldn't possibly want less of this newsletter, right? It's been dormant for so long!
Consumption
What we're feeling isn't a vibe shift. It's permanent change. Here are the seven loudest bands in the world. Closed captions should be much better. An explainer on the world of crypto, which is usually pretty poorly explained. Pusha T made a diss track of the Filet O Fish?! Speaking of raps, I am embarrassed to say I am from Plano, Texas. And speaking of embarrassments from Texas, Ted Cruz is a terrible book critic. The second season of Starstruck is out, on HBO Max! Imagine If, the last book from the late great Sir Ken Robinson. Design your spaces for joy. The Grist 50 features emerging leaders in climate and equity. And I'm listening to a lot of Leon Bridges.
Creations
A conversation about regret that transformed the way I think about it. Why trying to assimilate in America is problematic. I turned 4-0 and went back in time to celebrate! And stumbled on a Cold War museum in Culver City. On NPR It's Been a Minute, what all the failed tech founder TV shows have in common, and processing the one-year anniversary of the Atlanta shootings.
Other Ephemera/Recs
This guy is on top of the Russian military's logistics issues in Ukraine.
I Have Notes, a newsletter on writing, from The Atlantic
Pachinko premieres this weekend on AppleTV+! I have binged all eight episodes. It is sweeping, it is intimate, it is absorbing.
If you are on Clubhouse, next Tuesday I'm moderating a book talk about the important ideas Sir Ken leaves with us, featuring his daughter, Kate Robinson.
Coming Up
Headed to Vancouver, April 11-15. Let me know if you'll be near...
As usual, please reach out with comments, quips, recommendations of your own. And forward to anyone who might want to subscribe, since I obviously won't be flooding their inbox with frequent missives. :)
Don't listen to Pusha T. Get out there and getcher self a Filet O' Fish,
