Procrastination Station [#81]
Oh man.
I am supposed to start writing my commencement speech to the Class of 2019 at the Missouri School of Journalism but when everything you've ever achieved is on accident, it doesn't leave you with a lot of good life tips. (Don't tell the dean.) So here I am, writing you a newsletter instead.
Reading
The culture of workism is breaking us. It is okay to say this administration is more dishonest. You can "catch" anger like you catch a cold. The Dunning-Kruger effect, explained. Robert Mueller isn't gonna save this country. The Fox News White House. Look at this chart — something's gotta give. Pair it with this chart. How the Eastern band of Cherokees spent their "big money." Three generations of one Taiwanese family and the changing identity of the diaspora. Embracing celibacy is a thing for millennials? Even with men doing more household chores and childcare than they used to, the emotional energy of running a household falls disproportionately to women. Love is not a permanent state of enthusiasm. The two-income trap and how it shaped Elizabeth Warren. How to stream this year's Oscar movies.
Werk and Musings
Analyzed geopolitical intrigue with Sam Sanders for It's Been a Minute. A now out-of-date summit conversation with Brian Williams for MSNBC's 11th Hour. What would a millennial midlife crisis look like? My high school newspaper profiled me, it's adorkable. Fun fact: I never worked for this paper because I got kicked off before ever starting, for sneaking off the newspaper camp site with a boy, who, in a Dallas twist to this tale, was Tom Landry's grandson. Go Cowboys!?
Watch and Listen
Amanda Seales' comedy special on HBO
Russian Doll, omg Russian Doll. If you can't get into it after the pilot, give it until at least episode three, where I think things really take off.
Catastrophe is back this month, on Amazon!
Invisibilia returns later this week. Check out a great episode from last season, about all the things we leave unsaid and their consequences.
Recommendations
Giant plush avocado, a HUGE hit with Baby Luna, who calls it "Cado-Cado" and pushes it around in her doll stroller. I stumbled upon one at the Seattle airport for much less than the $200+ cost at the link, so look for it in gift shops!
And just to stay on the theme, avocado sneakers, h/t Joe Ruiz.
OK that's it for my stop at the procrastination station. What are your favorite commencement speeches? Send me some inspiration!
As our lives change, come whatever, we will still be, friends forever,
Elise
