The Land of Eternal Internet Explorer [#43]
Annyeonghaseyo!

(Can never get enough of the ol' kimchi slap.)
I'm going stir crazy because I'm grounded from air travel and stuck in heavily-polluted Seoul. But there's plenty to do, as there's been nonstop news on the patch, friends have come to visit (from Beijing and DC, respectively) and I hired a new Korea fixer/assistant! We are getting along like two soybeans in a pod.
What I Read
The world's happiest societies are the most gender-equal ones. Two different worlds, living next door to one another, on a Texas prairie. "Paul Manafort, who practically bleeds borscht." Why the Trump budget cuts won't happen. The Trump scandals cheat sheet. "The bigger risk is to stand for nothing." How we could lose the new asymmetrical cold war. How Beijing is catching toilet paper thieves. Why South Korea is the land of eternal Internet Explorer. Honey Nut Cheerios had to pull its bee mascot. The tragic death of Bank the Turtle. Photographs from life in rural Ohio. The familiar and the foreign, in matters of love. Movies about the same thing, released at the same time. 158 Irish politicians take positions on Beyonce. Watch Chuck Berry jam with John Lennon in 1972. BBC Dad speaks! This giraffe and I are in the same predicament. This exists: A ranch dressing fountain (h/t @doristruong). Texas lawmaker to men: You wanna tell us what to do with our bodies? How about we fine you for "masturbatory emissions"? (h/t @photomatt)
Speaking of wanking:

What I Wrote/Talked About
The #TillersonIsTired meme is what happens in a news vacuum. Tillerson's tougher tone on North Korea and the challenges the administration faces in East Asia. Nothing but respect for the great William Wan and how he followed a lovely story in Laos, all the way through. A warm welcome to my new assistant, Jihye. And somehow I became a stock photo, available for just $19.99.

Pay for Brain Pickings. You've likely come across Maria Popova's work, which is humane and often revelatory. We can't get away from the advertising-fueled publishing model (that then feeds fake news) unless we're willing to pay for the stuff we love.
