The Lush Laos Life [#27]
Sabai-dee (which is the Lao 'Aloha'),
Spent an incredible week in Laos, the landlocked Southeast Asian nation that today remains the most bombed country on earth, owing to the American 'secret war' there during Vietnam. Laotians were spirited, warm people and their country is untouched by commercialism — no Starbucks, no McDonald's. It's rare to find places like that anymore, and I loved it.
Now, herewith the links!
What I Read
Colin Kaepernick's patriotism. The cunning Kim Jong Un. Disappointment in Egypt. A simple negotiation tactic that helped lead to the climate change agreement. How to avoid alienating minority voters. The throughline between backlash to Obama and the rise of Trump. No one really wants your donated clothes. An oral history of the ChocoTaco. The only home improvement you really need. Bob Ross still surprises. When to charge your phone battery.
What I Worked On
Hope your phone battery isn't in the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. What a hit zombie flick says about South Korean society. What it's like to eat at a North Korean regime-run restaurant. Tiny Laos readies for a global summit. It's also a remote battleground for inter-Korean relations. The Philippines president is sorry about calling President Obama an obscenity. Kept calm and asked the leader of the free world about his broken North Korea policy. The 80 million unexploded bombs in Laos are still killing people. North Korea tests a nuclear weapon for the fifth time.
