USA USA [#25]
Hey y'all,
I'm back in Seoul after nearly a month away from home. At first it was super fun — Hawaii was my re-entry point to the United States and the plate lunches there are insane — but after going from Honolulu to D.C. and then briefly to New York and back to D.C., I started feeling like a lonely road bum at a super sad Courtyard Marriott.
But there was much reading and making of journalism happening! Herewith:
What I'm Reading
Early morning routines of super-early risers. The benefits of living in a city you don't like. The romance of battling zombies with your partner. Trying to make sense of what's happening in poor, white parts of America. Meet Michelle Obama's speechwriter. A worthwhile Cosby long-read. What mass killers have in common. "Perhaps the largest-ever repository of information about casual sex habits in the world." (Although apparently sex apathy is the current zeitgeist.)
What I Created
Tales of sexist TV network newsrooms. The dark side of K-pop girl groups. The high stakes of cute Japanese bento boxes. The higher stakes of being an elite gymnastics parent. The evolution of my musician friend, Rob.
What I'm Watching
Binged HBO's The Leftovers after sampling it on the plane. It's a downer: a meditation on grief. But timely. "This idea of grief as an all-pervasive force on Earth is one that feels intensely of the moment."
Recommendations
Late to this, but Bob Ross is on Netflix, y'all. h/t @lindamood
In this time of hyper-speed, Friend Wes collected some slow things to slow us down.
Jesse Williams' Tumblr. He's not only a hot doc on Grey's Anatomy, he's a brilliant social justice advocate, which is even hotter.
Have any good recs or links for the Hu's letter? Send 'em my way. And if you know anyone who might like this random assortment of links that comes at odd intervals, please forward!
Stay cool,
Elise
