You In Danger, Girl [#64]
OH HI AGAIN!
While I can now confidently do curling play-by-play should you need anyone for those purposes, those weeks living/working in Olympics village were relentless and cold and weirdly isolating. As a result, I've gotten really clingy with my children (now that we are reunited) and I keep saying to them, "HUG ME TIGHT! HUG ME TIGHT!" and they look at me like I'm insane. So anyway ... lots to catch up on! Herewith:
What I Read
Evidence-based look at how to reduce shootings. What hit me hardest here was the tagline: "Christine Yared is 15." The triple twist, an analysis. How Chloe Kim navigates being American and Korean-American. The deep rifts between reporters and their management. What's at stake after the Olympics. The importance of rudeness. They say ignore his words, but words are the only meaning we have. "It looks like America does not believe its democracy is worth fighting for." What to call this era? Democracide? Instructions for living in an "age of emergency." The last women with bound feet. Bonuses are good, if you're only trying to appear like a you're a good employer. How a lawmaker performs for the president on Fox. The whitewashing of Trump country. The Kickstarter for Robert Mueller prayer candles. Teens take porn literacy classes. Shakespeare's five-act story structure made Breaking Bad one of the best. An oral history of The Wire's infamous (and incredible) 'fuck' scene. The Japanese book store that sells one book at a time.
Work and Musings
Boy, it's windy! Another drop-in on Sam Sanders' podcast. Instagram shorts from the games: The Olympic fad known as "long padding." Trying bundaegi, aka silkworm casings. Hwaiting! Cultural gaffes at the games. The 'Garlic Girls,' South Korea's surprise Olympics sensation. The Japan-South Korea rivalry, center stage at the Olympics. My first (and probably only) hockey reporting. The Pyeongchang Olympics, cheers and jeers.
Watching/Listening
David Chang's new documentary series on Netflix, Ugly Delicious, is FANTASTIC. I especially love his sidekicks and interpreters who get involved in the episodes.
The other night a few of us got into a debate about the best 30 for 30 episodes. For my money it's OJ Made in America (of course), but I also like the Tonya and Nancy one a lot. Friend Chico says you haven't seen The Two Escobars, that's up there. If you have a favorite 30 for 30 to share with the class, please write me!

I hope I'll get back into a twice-monthly Hu's letter rhythm now that I am not living in a sad apartment by myself and working on both sides of the clock. Send those 30 for 30 recs or anything else you think should be in the next edition...
Stayin' alive,
Elise
